Oxford Septuagint Seminar

17 June | 2:00 PM (BST)

“Translating the Word of God: Synagogues and the Septuagint in the Late Second Temple Period”

Prof. William Schniedewind is Distinguished Professor of Biblical Studies & Northwest Semitic Languages and Sady and Ludwig Kahn Director of the Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies at UCLA.

The Septuagint is usually understood as an Alexandrian translation created for Greek-speaking Jews in Egypt. This paper argues that the Greek Bible also reflects the institutional and theological world of Jerusalem, including the rise of synagogues, the public reading of Torah, and the growing understanding of Scripture as the fixed “word of God.” By examining the Letter of Aristeas, Greek-speaking synagogues, and several case studies in Septuagint translation, the lecture explores how translation became part of the transformation of Jewish textual culture in the late Second Temple period.

This paper is drawn from a chapter of Prof. Schniedewind’s forthcoming book.
